New research group joins BMLS

February 2017. In February, Maike Windbergs and her research team joined the BMLS. The group is working on novel drug delivery approaches to treat infectious and inflammatory diseases of epithelial tissues such as the skin and the buccal mucosa. To translate such concepts into the clinical application, a major research focus is on developing preclinical in vitro models as predictive alternative to animal models. According to the 3R-concept (replace, reduce, refine), the group is working on three-dimensional cell cultivates to simulate human tissue in healthy and diseased state. Such models allow for elucidating the due and progress of diseases (e.g. wound infections) as well as testing novel approaches for drug delivery in a pathophysiologically relevant environment. The professorship is embedded into the Faculty 14 (Biochemistry, Chemistry and Pharmacy) of Goethe University and the research focus bridges the interface of fundamental and applied sciences.

BMLS welcomes Maike Windbergs and her research team and is very much looking forward to a successful collaboration.
