Achilleas Frangakis appointed BMLS Vice Director

October 2018. Achilleas Frangakis, BMLS Group Leader since 2011 has been appointed BMLS Vice Director as of 10th October 2018 by BMLS Director Enrico Schleiff.

Achilleas Frangakis was born in 1975 in Athens and grew up there. He studied electrical engineering and information theory at the TU Munich and found his way into the life sciences through his PhD project at the MPI for Biochemistry in Martinsried. There he started to apply his technical know-how to solving biological research questions in the area of the application and optimisation of cryo electron tomography. He followed this up with a postdoc at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, before moving to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, where he led his first research group. Achilleas Frangakis has been Professor for Cryo Electron Tomography at the Institute of Biophysics of the Goethe University since 2008. He won one of the coveted ERC starting grants in 2009 and the ERC Proof of Concept grant. He was one of the first research groups moving into the BMLS.
